As if the ground breaking Rough Rider wasn’t enough, just a short time later, in December 1979, Tamiya gave us the Sand Scorcher Special Racing Buggy.  The same innovative chassis as its brother and sporting an incredible VW Beetle bodyshell with 2 completely different box art designs and decals to choose from or just ‘freestyle it’.  A very very special RC and a major favourite amongst RC fans.  In 2010, the Sand Scorcher was re-released with the new version keeping very close to its vintage ancestor.

I never had a Scorcher when I was a kid, to be honest never really lusted after one either. It was when I got back into retro RC back in 2007 that I got a liking for them and at the time they were a sort of holy grail for collectors. Mine was my second resto job and it was a one owner very early example, I loved the challenge of finding the old parts and the feeling of owning something special and quite rare. Thought they are still a great car and arguably Tamiya’s most well know ‘Iconic’ car I can’t help but feel they’ve lost the special feeling as now anyone with a couple of hundred pounds can go out and buy one without effort due to the Re Re. I own two of the originals one which I run which is a great beach runner the other is a dust gatherer but great to look at. Even though they are no longer so special, every vintage collector should have at least one!

    Andy,
I also have x2 at present one thatis a Mk2 runner and the Mk1 when finished will sit on the shelf and will be BoxArt as all collectors should at least have owned th real BoxArt version.
Great cars nad have just had my runner for the first time truning at Bournmouth Beach, loved every second :-)
The SRB’s are a great chassis as it is proper engineered parts unlike the bath-tub style chassis out there now :-(
