Instantly recognisable with its classic scale buggy looks, the Super Champ was released in December 1982 and was the last of Tamiya’s vintage line of Special Racing Buggies (SRB). There is a mighty fanbase for this classic hit of a machine.

One of the best SRB evolutions, some criticise this and say its not a true SRB at all, however in use (even when launched) this was a far superior handling buggy compared to the sand scorcher and rough rider, with a rear end that actually worked and damped. At the time I remember looking at the rear monoshock and thinking how cool is that? Shame it leaked oil from the non stop drip oil tank but hey!!
Still love this one, still run one. The SRB MkII you could say. The rear suspention was very unique and still is. I don’t think it worked as well as the ads would have you believe, and it was way too heavy for serious competition but it looks great is a fun build and with all the re-re cars there are some spares to be had can’t have enough of these, looking at another one now……..oh boy….
